In this post we are going to learn about the mail types of wine tasting. So that, when you hear someone talking about a vertical tasting or a blind one, you will know what they are referring to.
There are three types of wine tasting: vertical, horizontal and blind.
In a vertical tasting, different vintages of the same wine are tasted. The main objective of this kind of tasting is to learn about the differences between the vintages, to study the wine’s evolution in the time or to analyze the changes in the vinification methods. It is usual to start the tasting with the oldest vintage.
In a horizontal tasting all the wines have a common feature, for example, there are usually from the same vintage, region or grape variety. It is a very useful tasting since many different aspects can be compared: different vinification methods, the impact different soils and regions have in the same grape variety, and so on.
In a blind tasting, the wines identities are hidden by either wrapping the bottles or putting them in paper bags. Then the bottles are numbered and scored without tasters being influenced by the brand, vintage, label or grape variety.
Now, do you want to make a tasting? We hope so. Don’t miss the next post of Learning and Enjoying the tasting. We will see the use of our senses.
