Second fortnight of September and the harvest begins as planned in Rías Baixas. The 400 hectares of vineyards that Bodegas Martín Códax works with are already waiting to be gradually harvested, in order to let the grapes reach the ideal ripening.
Last year’s work in I+D+i has already given Martín Códax the hability to choose the grapes in their own vineyard so they are taken to the winery in a much more organized and quicker way. Thanks to the use of teledetection, taking pictures during the ripening process of the grapes has given the field team the ability to classify 65% of the grapes depending on how vigorous they were to then, allow them to work as much as possible with what we know as precise vitivulture. This is an innovative method which allows us to organise the harvest much more efficiently.
How the 2016 harvest will be ? Even if the heavy rainfalls along with the low temperatures recorded in Rías Baixas in spring predicted an important delay in the harvest, in the end, and thanks to the weather changes during summer, which has been dry and very hot, the harvest has been done in similar periods as it always used to be done. What is for sure is that the last weeks hot temperatures will change the 2016 vintage compared to the previous one making it less acidic, but always maintaining the albariño authenticity which is unique for its citric and salty aromas.
